Cost of floating a horse's teeth?

My horse had his teeth floated last year with no problem-this past month the trainer I am with insisted he needed them "cut down" and I was charged over $175.00 for this although I see no visible difference in his mouth-any comments??

If your vet went ahead and did the procedure, than it must have needed to be done. My vet is very honest about what procedures need/should be done and what can be left alone. She knows how expensive horses are and she always tries to save us horse owners a buck when she can. I would hope that your vet was the same way and only floated the teeth if your horse needed it. Most vets became vets because they love to help animals, not because they want to make money. Also, you probably won't notice a visible difference in your horse's mouth. Horses can't tell us where they are feeling pain, and sharp teeth are painful, so the most noticeable difference will be felt by your horse, and not seen by you.
Reply:Depending on the procedure it can get costly. It may have cost this much if your equine dentist had to remove any teeth or fill in any of your horses teeth. I had a severe rescue case that cost me $300.

But if you have questions I would call the equine dentist and consult him about the bill and why it was so costly.
Reply:Just because your horse had his teeth floated a year ago doesn't mean that it doesn't need to be done again. depending on how well the person that did the work vet vs eq dentist and whether is was done manually with a float or a power dental your horse may have needed add work done again. sometimes they don't get all the points and these have to be cut down because of the way the horse chews. these points will interfere with how a horse wears the bridle and how well they work etc. the cost is about in the ball park and even cheaper than what I pay here in Calif. the cost may have also incurred a sedation and ranch call. so I would check with who did the dental and find out what all the charges are. And seeing any visible differences are hard to see since most are on the molars in the far rear of the mouth. but you may notice that your horse works better. good luck and hope all this helps
Reply:You wouldn't. They take off the sharp points only. These sharp points prevent them from grinding down their food.
