How can i get my tranqulise my horse so i can clip the hooves and do her teeth without getting the vet out?

Feed her chamomile tea, about 4-5 teabags of it.then a bit of water.. then wait until she relaxes..she will like it, and its kinda like catnip, and relaxes them.

But horses are notorious for the problems that can happen.


You definitely need a professional.
Reply:I've seen horse feet done with the horse awake. Talk to the vet.
Reply:you can get rx from the vet that will calm a horse down but most of them don't need anything just to float their teeth or trim their feet or even shor them just handle them right.

You should not be mucking about with sedatives at all. If someone supplies you with some, they can be jailed! It is a very serious offence!

Personally, I have found that trank'ing a horse for any means other than necessary medical procedures is ill advised and fool hearty. The only time that medication should be given is when an animal absolutely needs it and then it should only be administered by a vet.


Often, sedating a horse has the opposite effect and then you will have to wait until the sedatives wear off.


Instead of the "easy" way out, how about you re-train your horse to learn that simple hoof trimmings are not done by the boggie man.


As for floating the teeth, a vet does that procedure and they will make the decision about administering sedation. Stay away from try to float a horse mouth unless you have formal training. It is NOT for the amature. Done badly, the damage can be cruel and lasting to a horse.


I have to question why you would want to attempt hoof trimming and teeth floating if you need to sedate your horse to get the job done. Hmmm.........

What if you trim the horse and it goes lame, worst could happen to floating its teeth, it should only be done by a professional.





From a person who loves equine, if you are not interested in getting the vet and farrier out, maybe you should think of finding a good home for the animal.
Reply:This is why animals need to be used to being handled. When they need routine or emergancy medical help, they get stressed by being handled as well a sthe procedure.





It is illegal for you or anyone other than a vet to dope a horse. Some tranks have the opposite effect on horses.


It is illegal for anyone other than a farrier to trim the feet. Getting it wrong can harm the animal.





I hope your horse is not being kept alone in a field. It would really benefit from being taken to a rest home for horses, where it can be taught to tolerate being handled. It would have the company of other horse - they are herd animals, not solitary. Being kept alone drives them mad.


And it would benefit from experienced care.





Try Redwings, or Bransby, or the RSPCA if you decide to rehome this animal.


If you decide to keep it then find someone who 'starts' or trains horses.
Reply:hi i have the same problem. i buy equie calm. it comes in a wormer tube it costs around £12. but it really does work it has 30mls of paste, i have a 14.2hh heavy weight cob and he was supposed to have 10ml but i gave him 20ml and it worked a treat you can buy it on eBay spelling might be different though
Reply:Simon D is correct. In addition, you can cripple a horse doing its hooves if you do not know how to go about it. I have a cousin who is a farrier.


To me, if you have a horse, and can not afford proper care, it is unfair to the horse. Not that I am criticising, but trying to encourage you to spend money if you must.

Reply:Get a farrier and vet to help - don't cause suffering to your horse. If you can't afford to do this, then maybe you would be better selling or loaning her out as horses are expensive animals to look after.
