I was at a farm once and was suddenly bitten by a horse on my abdomen.?

The horse was in a stable and I just stroke its nose bridge but out of the blue it turned its head and bit me. It was so sudden that I pulled my body away . Luckily the horse teeth are not sharp ...I got away some some bruise around my abdomen.

I have never heard of horse biting anyone ..what could be the reason this had happen ?

Horses cannot see directly in front of them. Because of how their eyes are set, they can see on both sides of their head with some overlap. The animal's brain has to blend the two images but there is still a large "unknown" variable.

To get a sense of what a horse doesn't see, put your palms together and put your hands over your nose. You can see the objects to the right of your eyes, and to the left, but you don't know what might be right in front of you.

Beyond that, horses have a variety of personalities. Some horses want nothing but attention from everyone while others only have that one person they feel comfortable with.

Rule of thumb around horses - don't pet unless the owner/handler/rider has told you the horse is safe. Or, stand to the side of the head where the horse can see you.
Reply:He didn't like you?
Reply:Horses will bite sometimes. Next time don't stand so close.
Reply:no dude
Reply:Horses can be very fickle. Yes they can bite and be extremely aggressive. Glad you weren't hurt to bad. Horses are hard to read, unlike a dog. You know when a dog is angry and they give you warning
Reply:Yeah if a horse gets pisssed off it will either through a kick, or bite out! Just watch out next time!!! lol
Reply:You never know what is happening in the horses head.... Maybe he didn't like you, maybe he felt threatened, maybe he just had a bad day...

Mostly if a horse bites, we are the ones to be blamed.

Some horses had a bad experience with people and they lost the trust or have fear....

You should try to remember did you do anything that could disturb the horse....

But there are some signs that can help you to read the horse, if he wants to bite he will hold his ears back and some show their teeth also...

Not many, but some can be aggressive and usually the owner will tell you that.
Reply:horses bite,,, just like any other animal.

bad attitude, or distempered, most likely is the cause of this one biting you,,,,, young stallions are known to bite at the drop of a hat.... could have been the case as well...... or maybe it was a mare and she didn't like the way you smelled.....

the list of reasons is almost endless.
Reply:Horses do bite and the reason is usually they are scared. Sudden motion or did you come up to the horse from the front? They don't see as well straight on.You should come up to a horse from the side so he can see you and do it very slow and no loud noises.Sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident.
Reply:Some horses are biters. There are many reasons for this... The most common is that when the horse tried to bite once it wasn't corrected, and now its befome a habit. If you aren't experianced with horses, the horse could have been trying to see who is head horse, you or him. (hint: it should always be the human) Or somthing could have been bothering the horse that made it short tempered.

Its a good idea to never touch as horse unless you have the owners expressed permission, and when you do, hold out your hand for the horse to sniff before you pet him. Usually its best to pet the horses neck if you are just geting to know him. I've actualy had my horse for 2 years and still never just walk up and touch her head, its rather rude.
Reply:He wanted to be left alone. Just because he is standing there doesn't mean you should pet him. Any animal with teeth can bite. Be careful.
Reply:Horses can be butts... I worked on a racetrack and my favorite thoroughbred got ticked off at me for ignoring him so when I went by... he got my attention by biting me on my back.
Reply:That happened to me before when i was ten. i was visting my cranky mare, and she opend her mouth wicked wide, and bit my chest so hard, i remember getting my mom and showing her that hula bit me. when i showed my mom she started crying! it was huge, and purple, black, green, brown, and a mix of other colors. the colors eventually went away, but there's still a big scar today. everytime i see it, i think of my cranky mare i had when i was a kid!
Reply:i am baffled.

you say you were stroking the nose bridge when it turned its head and bit you, does that mean you were not facing the horse but standing next to it?

how tall are you? i mean for the horse to bite you on the abdomen you must be very tall?

You pulled your body away...why was your abdomen turned to the horse...

well, never mind

luckily it wasn't your crotch

PS i friend of mine was kicked in the crotch by a horse - we now call him quarter ball...
