Floating teeth and trimming hooves?

Quick question...I am having my two horses teeth floated tomorrow... they do need their feet done as well, would it be okay to schedule the farrier for the same day?? (I am obviously new to all of this...just didn't know if one of the horses had to be sedated for teeth, if it was okay to do feet after that.....) Should I probably just wait until this weekend for feet??

Floating teeth and trimming hooves?
um, i wouldent have my horses feet trimmed right after the floating, but before it would be good, a horse usually needs to have his feet trimmed 5 to 6 weeks,it depends on how the foot grows, but do not schedule the horse to have his feet done right after the floating! that is a huge no no, the horse would give ur farrier a hard time standing up! and if u ride the horse, i would hold off on that for a Day or 2, cause ur horse will be soar
Reply:Yes your horse will be sedated.. sedated horses feel more comfortable... I have seen a shire stallion get sedated for floating, did just fine, very tough boy though. and no do not give him food when it is over, he might choke. It will be better to do the hooves later on... when was the last time their feet were trimmed?
Reply:Depends on the person floating the teeth and how bad the teeth are as far as if there will be sedation and how much. I would probably schedule them on separate days or at least one in the morning and one in the afternoon, farrier first then teeth.
Reply:If you do schedule a ferrier on the same day, i would advise you to have him come before the vet does. Earlier than the vet by at least two hours, depending on how they act with the ferrier. This is because floating a horse's teeth can take a little time, or several hours. It depends on the horse. Also, a sedated horse may have poorer balance if given too much and have a hard time standing with only three feet to have them trimmed.
Reply:I wouldn't suggest doing the feet the same day.

They dont always have to be sedated, but can with a tough horse.

This would make having their feet done a little difficult. And the horse may not be totally balanced. For some horses, like mine it takes a while for the stuff to wear off.

Good Luck
Reply:yea because the horses might get mad and act up so it would be a good idea to do it latter on.
Reply:Ask your vet to give your horse a reversible sedative, then when the teeth are done, your vet can give a reversal drug, and within 10 minutes your horse will be back to normal.

I always have my horses sedated with reversible sedatives for things like floating teeth. That way I can put them right back on the trailer after it's done and safely take them home.

There's no reason you can't do both on the same day if the vet uses a reversible sedative. Just be sure to schedule enough time for each procedure- ask your vet how long to allow.
Reply:I would honestly not do them "back to back". Especially if your horse is sore, has complications or is still "under" if you want the horse to balance for trimming.

I would honestly do the trimming first and make sure no complications on that. Then I would schedule the floating with in an hour or two later. Just as percaution.

I wouldn't do the floating unless you wanted to do the trimming later in the day when sedation wears off and horse is sound enough to balance etc.

That is my intake.
Reply:Some sedate the horse others dont. I know some ferriers that would like to. But the horse can still stand and walk so getting the hooves trimmed shouldnt be a big deal if they are coming to your place you could ahve them each working on 1 then trade it would get done quicker.
