bought young Arabian mare, two days ago, when she got here she was foaming at the mouth, covered in sweat and twisting her neck from side to side and hitting her sides with her muzzel, almost like she was weaving but with out the front foot motion weavers do, Arabs are just occasionally nerotic so ,i figured she was nervous about the ride and maybe a little trailer sick, stopped doing it when turned out,but still get very foamy mouth when eating hay and lays down alot will occasionally do the neck thing if my other horses get near her, seems very healthy otherwise though could use some weight anyone ever have this problem,is she just nerotic or should i be concerned about some strange horse disease? i thought maybe she is having a tooth issue, she is young and may be losing baby teeth though i cant see anything wrong in her mouth would pain make her act nutty and "bite" at her sides? please any help would be appreciated, dont want to have to call vet if horse is just insane
New horse acting strange please help?
If she's young she may never have left her last home, may never have been on a trailer. She's in a new place and away from what she knows. You might just let her settle in for a few days.
Did you get a vet check before you bought her? If not I would strongly suggest getting a vet out there just to be sure nothing else is going on.
Reply:I would definately call a vet.
She could possibly have been drugged in order for quick sale too.
Hope your mare is OK.
Never heard of this before.
Reply:Those sound like classic symptoms of colic (indigestion)...this can be very serious in horses, so I definitely think you should call a vet right away, if she's still showing these symptoms. Also, if she's acting like that and trying to lie down, you should halter her and attach her so that she can't lie down....it can be dangerous for a horse to lie down if they have colic.
Good luck.
Reply:What Birdie said about colic is true. A horse biting at it's side is being bothered by the pain. If this is the case, don't let the horse lay down. Or if she is down, then get her up on her feet. Most horse people will tell you to put on a halter and walk her around (for what seems like hours) to try to get the blockage moving. I'm no expert but I have heard that too much grain like corn and sweetfeed is a major cause. Horses naturally eat grasses and have no cholic problems I know of. And the foamy mouth may be from the hay if it contains a lot of blighted clover. It is the fungus on the clover and not the clover itself making the horses mouth foam. It isn't harmful but it is unsightly.

Reply:in my opinion arabian are crazy does that help??
i dint think it would
Reply:She could definitly be drugged for a easy sale or hay or grass with clover in it will make horses foam really badly. i would think of calling a vet soon though.
Reply:this sounds a lot like colic, but colic will only last for about 5 hours at the longest. she could have been drugged for a quick sale or drugged for the trailer ride, so she would be calm. it could also be that she is not friendly towards other horses and lunges at them. teeth do not cause horses to be mean to others. a painful tooth can cause tossing of the head on the ground and under saddle. infected teeth cause bad breath. my horse has had to have 2 teeth pulled becuase they were infected. sharp points can cut the mouth and that can cause discomfort. personally i would call the vet if it didn't stop in a couple of days. hope that helps!
