Senior horse?

I have a 26 year old morgan horse. He still acts like a 5 year old. He has never had any health issues %26amp; the vet says he has exeptionally good teeth. I was wondering how I can keep him in this condition. All I give him is sweet feed (no vitamins or anything) so I don't know how he is doing as well as he is doing. How can I keep him in the condition he is in now (or better) %26amp; give him the care a senior horse needs? Please help me I love him more than anything %26amp; he is my life. I want him to live a happy, healthy, long life

Senior horse?
Check your local feed store--they have special feed for "senior's" that has all the extra vitamin's and mineral's an older horse need's!
Reply:Just keep doing what you're doing...it obviously works for him!!

(you'll get a lot of people who will give you all kinds of other advise and wil not like my answer) But I have an elderly horse and I feed him the same. Aout the same story as yours! Don't we love our horses!!??
Reply:There is a senior feed just for the older ages. Check you local pet supply store. Its like pelletts, but packed with all kinds of viatimins for older horses.
Reply:you need to give him vitamin supplements, and feed him senior food in the pellets because with age there teeth wear down and you may need to have his teeth floated because of spears
Reply:Sounds like you have been doing a good job caring for him! Keep it up! I have been doing the same with my horses, both are over 25, but dont look it! God Bless Ya! But keep an eye on his teeth.....
Reply:well i would keep doing what u r all ready doing ...well if he's 26 that means he's already past expected life span ...just keep doing what u r doing ...good luck and good job!!!! :)
Reply:Thats great that your horse is doing great!!!!!!!! I'd say just keep doing what your doing, if you've been feeding him this routine for a while, I'd keep it, it is obviuously working for him. There is senior feed for horses too, but I wouldnt change on him now unless he gets bad then I'd change to senior feed.

Best of Luck to your Morgan!
Reply:Morgans are generally hardy, long-lived breeds. The sweet feed you give him, though, is probably a major source of his energy. Sweet feed on its own is not a complete diet, and is high in fats and sugars that fuel a horse's metabolism and provide it with that excess energy. If he's been doing fine and you can handle him without any issues, then don't worry about changing anything at this juncture. Eventually, though, he may start to need added nutrients to help fuel his aging body. Some older horses do well on feeds specially formulated for seniors. Others require the added fats of beet pulp mixed in with their normal feed. But if he's fine right now, just keep doing what you're doing. Don't fix it if it's not broken.
Reply:Purina makes a wonderful "Senior" feed. Altho he may look good with what youre giving him, he does need the additional vitamins and minerals. I had a 26 yr old mare who thought she was two!! Isnt it great! I hope he's around for a long time. Best of luck to you.

PS A vet can tell you the vitamin/mineral needs for older horses.
Reply:okay, all you need to do is keep riding him and just keep doing the same thing you are doing right now. He seems to like it, so that is good, I have a horse just like your Morgan so I know what I am talking about.
Reply:feed your horse some hey
Reply:I would do what you are doing right now. It works for him and obviously is in great condition!!!

The only other thing i would suggest is to still take him out for "walks" (if you are not riding him) so he doesnt get fat and that can cause too much on the joints, which will lead to more and more problems! Feed him some senior feeds and/or joint suppliments. (i use a great joint suppliment.. it helped my senior horse too, and i can talk to my 'horse friends' and see what kinds of senior feeds/suppliments they use.... one of my friends horse is 26yr old! And i know that she uses joint suppliments and a special type of senior feed.)

Reply:I say you are doing perfectly good on him ;) Hey, if he made it through all these 26 years then he can continue more. You must be a wonderful person for your horse so why doubting abou it? I wish you good luck to you and your horse. I say that the vet clearly explained that he is doing fine, I don't think he need the vitamins yet...unless ofcourse he is needing them, BUT it would be much better to ask your vet, they know it ;) Like many people said before, keep doing the same thing. You are doing a wonderful job.
