Horse not Gaining Weight... Please help!?

I have a horse that is 26 years old. Palamino Mare. She is starting to gain a little bit of weight. She is on straight green grass and senior horse feed. She also has all of her teeth. But, she will not gain weight. She has been wormed and everything.

Horse not Gaining Weight... Please help!?
Stress, pain, infection, poor teeth and age - depending on the breed can be a part of it. Poor wormer performance could be another. I would try a different wormer and double check everywhere on her for tenderness and check her body temp for fever or it being too low.

As for a food solution, go to a day-old bread store and buy them out of their wheat or white bread. Suppliment the feed with a loaf or two every day. This has been very helpful with putting weight on elderly rescues. I would also consider that with all the food recalls that maybe something is not great with the Sr Feed...
Reply:Uh ~ give it time?
Reply:When my older horse wasn't gaining weight we added some vegetable oil on top of her food. I think we did a Cup ontop of her food every night... it really helped and made her coat really shiny too! We also gave her whole grain bread in the AM, as someone else mentioned although just 4 or 5 slices not a whole loaf. But probably each horse is different, so just try and see what works.
Reply:On the feed market there are pellets that will put wieght on your horse. Im pretty sure they are called CALM something. We used to use them with the race horses that we have but found that even with all the work we give them they still became a bit routound. Good luck
Reply:add a cup of corn oil to her senior feed. It does wonders and horses love it. Plus its cheap. We feed all our horses corn oil at lunch and they're all doing great. This is in a hunter jumper show barn with a string of school horses in various ages. I am the director of the school horse program and corn oil is magic
Reply:Give her pellet beet pulp you can find that at any feed store.Start with a small coffe can a half in a bucket add water to cover it even a little more let it set a few hrs it expandsalot By next wk increase to a full small coffe can. What I do I give it in the afternoon then I make it again that night for the next day.I put a half a can of rolled oats anda half a can senior I addthat before I give it to them. You will see the weight come on beet pulp is the best be sure you say you want the pellet. It comes in a 50 lb.bag %26amp; its not exspensive either.
