Do horses bite people? has any horse ever bitten any person's finger off?

i was feeding an apple to my friends horse. i couldnt help noticing how huge its teeth were but i didnt want to seem afraid to feed it the apple. their eyes seem quite a long distance back from their teeth. can they tell where an apple ends and a person's hand begins?

Do horses bite people? has any horse ever bitten any person's finger off?
the reason their eyes are so far away from there mouth is because when they ate tall grass in the wild before man tamed them, and even now, is because there eyes would be over the grass, allowing them to see any predators coming after them.

Horses are prey animals, which means they use their teeth to defend themselves. If something is doing something the horse isnt comfortable with, it will most likely pin his ears back (a sign of anger) and nipe or bite.

They also might accidentally bite you. If they are taking something from your hand, they may accidentally get your finger or hand in there too. You have seen the size of their teeth, and for being that large, they have a hard time biting what they want to consume.

Horses also might bite you hand if they want more. The more treats you hand feed them, the more they will come looking for your hand to see if it has a treat in it.

I hope that explains it!!
Reply:Horses can NOT bite off peoples fingers. Their teeth are not that sharp. Come on don't be ridiculous. Report It

Reply:hey horses dont defend their self with their teeth! where d ya get that fromsome stupied movie?

they kick sumin if its buggin them!!!!!!! Report It

Reply:I don't know if a horse has ever bitten a person's finger off, but yes horses do bite. One has bitten my instructer and nipped at me before.
Reply:i never personally had my finger bit but im sure it happens. i did have a horse bite onto my back once though when i fell. i was going into the barn to help the owner, it sucked i was like 6
Reply:no, but horses can.
Reply:No they can't tell where a apple ends and where your fingers begin and they can easily take your finger with him. Thats why you keep your hand flat. If you lay a board down flat they can't get there teeth on it, same scenario as your hand. You may feel the teeth touching but they cannot bite into it. Horses and babies groom my hand all the time. Horses do bite and honestly if someone gets bit, its there fault for letting there guard down. I watched a woman get bit by stallion in her boob, completely pulled her up off the ground. Yeah.... Ouch... but, we were in the breeding shed and she kept to much slack in the shank. Could have been completely avoided.
Reply:Horses may nip at you when you're angry.

A cow bit my thumb once (long story) and I went to the emergency room. The lady there said, "I've seen plenty of horse bites but no cow bites." Maybe that answers your question?

Oh, and also people at my county fair put up signs that say, "Don't stick fingers in cage, horse bites."
Reply:Yes, they can bite. I was always told to lay the apple (or whatever you have) on your palm and keep your hand as flat as possible so the horse doesn't bite your finger. Based on that advice, I'm assuming they can't tell where the apple ends and your fingers begin. Although, in those cases, I'm pretty sure the bites are accidental. But some horses can be aggressive and bite intentionally.
Reply:yes horses do bite ppl, I can tell you that from personal experience. I've never heard of a horse biting someone's finger off....I don't think it's on record if something like that's ever happened.
Reply:Horses can accidentally bite peoples fingers if they aren't holding their hand flat when they are feeding them. One horse actually bit part of my aunt's ear off. I absolutely adore horses though. They are my favorite animal.

  1. Horses can and HAVE bitten off people's fingers. Horses have also permanently disfigured people by biting them in the face. Also, in a few rare cases, some people have died from a horse bite to the neck or other vital area.

Whoever is posting that horses cannot bite off fingers, just needs to do a simple Google search and they will come across several graphic photos of horse bite injuries.

A horse like any animal, needs to be treated with respect and care. Horses are wonderful animals, but just as a dog can cause serious injure or death, so can a horse.
