My horse's name is Mistress in Paris, and she has currently got her two front teeth in small stumps, so the poor horse can't eat properly and as her back teeth hurt her mouth she doesn't want to go, which is fair enough. Since we only got her a few months ago now, she has improved in her condition, but I am still shocked that anyone could leave her in such a poor condition!! We are getting the dentist around to fix her back teeth soon, so the back teeth won't hurt her and I am going to hand feed her with rhodes grass hay, and also feed her pellets and food to put on condition, until her front teeth are long enough for her to be able to eat from the paddock again. She is a lovely horse, it's such a shame that her teeth and condition are that bad. If you know of anything that I can do to improve her weight further, I would really appreciate it!!!! I want to get her fit and healthy again!! PLEASE!! She deserves to be happy again!!!
Help with conditioning and improving a poor horse?
You can always mush down complete senior pellets with water to make it easier for her to eat, drizzle a few molasses in there to make it more platable. A bit of Red Cell probably wouldn't hurt her either. Corn oil will help her coat pick up and keep her skin supple. I would also worm her and give her a big dusting with some louse powder just to cover all bases. Blanketing her at night if it's cool will also help her to retain body heat and not use up so much keeping warm.
Reply:My old mare kept losing weight even after her teeth were checked (they were fine) and she was dewormed with Panacur PowerPak. We didn't want to put her on senior feed, so we used Ultimate Finish, which is used on rescue horses. It has a high fat content which really helped her and she gained all the weight back.
Reply:beet pulp can help too. But I find oil of any sort works the best. Have you wormed her? And if so I think I would still ask the vet to check her for wormers or skip that all together and worm her again if it has been at least 6 weeks since the last time making sure you use a different wormer if she is in that bad of condition then she probley has a lot of worms and you only got some of them killed the first go round
Reply:well around this time last year i recieved a horse pretty much similar to ur case and i had the fun job of trying to fatten the poor guy up. i now use flaked barley. wat u do is get 2 cups of it, put it into a bucket and pour hot water over it and leave it until it has completely doubled its original size. give this to ur horse every day with chaff, a brand called pegasus with the title of liberty and give ur horse its minerals such as 1Tbs garlic and livermall. you could always give the horse a good worming and get the vet to give ur horse a drench. i think u will find within a few weeks ur horse will start to look a lot better. also get the horse a lick block. i hope this information works for u for it certainly worked for me, good luck for the future!!!!! have fun
Reply:You most likely need a vet to look at her. I think you might start there.
Reply:soy meal is an option, add it to her pellet ration, Its not very tasty, but it helps put condition on a poor animal
